Western pet foods are becoming more expensive as consumers increasingly demand healthier alternatives.
As a result, pet food makers are shifting to more expensive, nutrient-dense products that are more suitable for older dogs and cats.
The main reason for the rising prices is that a growing number of consumers are choosing healthier products that include more vitamins and minerals, according to a new study published in the journal Consumer Reports.
More than half of the pet food products surveyed in the study were either lower in calories, more expensive or had lower-than-average vitamin content, the researchers found.
“This is a great news story for consumers, as pet food companies should be able to offer products that meet the growing demand for a healthier pet food,” says Dr. Jonathan Cahn, an animal nutritionist at the University of North Carolina.
“The only way to get there is to change the way they make their products.”
Dietitian, pet and health expert: More research needed for western pet food to be ‘just right’ The study, led by the University at Buffalo, analyzed the sales of the top three pet food manufacturers.
It found that American pet food giants Nestle, Hershey and Schweppes had more than half the sales volume for pet foods in the U.S. American pet food giant Nestle has a market share of more than 11% of the total pet food market.
Nestle’s Petfood division sells more than 30 pet food lines, including several brands with a low-calorie label, including the popular Pippin brand, which has been targeted by health advocates for its lack of vitamin content.
Schweppes sells a range of pet food options including Pet Food Choice, Pet Food Plus, and Pet Food Xtra, which includes the popular Aloe and other popular brands.
It also sells several brands that do not meet the American Pet Nutrition Standards.
Despite the growing competition, the top dog in the pet grocery market is Nestle.
A recent survey found that 61% of pet owners surveyed said they use a pet food brand that is at least three times the price of a comparable brand that does not include more nutritional benefits.
And in the food business, Nestle is the largest pet food company by market share.
Although it has faced a number of legal and regulatory challenges, Nestlé remains the top-selling pet food supplier in the United States, according, Consumer Reports research.
What’s in your dog food?
Your dog needs a great diet, but dietitian Scott Biederman knows first-hand how important it is to get enough protein, which is essential for building strong bones and teeth.
To get enough of it, he recommends adding a combination of lean meats, poultry and fish, along with a variety of vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes.
To keep his diet from becoming too full, he also enjoys a smoothie or two, which he mixes with a protein-rich cereal or protein powder.
What you’ll need: For the base: Ground turkey, chicken, ground beef, ground lamb, chicken breasts, ground pork, lean ground beef or pork rinds, eggs, nuts, or a combination thereof (depending on how lean your dog’s diet is)
